One of the greatest sculptors of the early twentieth century, the German artist Wilhelm Lehmbruck ranks alongside Ernst Barlach () as one of Germany's two most important figures in the expressionist movement, and is best known for the pathos of his female nudes, whose forms were inspired by German Gothic sculpture. Wilhelm Lehmbruck () is one of the most important German sculptors of the twentieth century. His oeuvre comprises approximately one hundred sculptures, more than a thousand drawings, eighty paintings and large-scale drawings and some two hundred prints.

    The collector Sally Falk visited Lehmbruck in and soon bought several of his works with the help of art dealer Paul Cassirer. Later in Lehmbruck portrayed Falk and his wife in Mannheim, where his first solo exhibition started in November. From Mannheim he travelled to .
